Overview of the modules

You will find a study plan in the module handbook. A short overview of all compulsory modules is given below, sorted by year. The compulsory modules are all held in German.


Course catalogue - LSF

The Bachelor Biology course is modularised. The modules consist of several courses. Place and time of the courses can be found in the electronic course catalogue LSF. Usually the courses are registered via the LSF. More information on the use of the LSF can be found here.


Compulsory modules in the 1st year

Bio110 - Cell and molecular biology

The module is only offered in the winter semester. It consists of a lecture, an exercise and a practical course. The practical course does not start until December.

Bio120 - Botany

The Bio 120 module consists of a lecture, an exercise and a practical course. The module is only offered in the winter semester. The module takes place one afternoon per week and is held during the entire lecture period. More information can be found on the pages of the Institute of Botany.

Physics for Biologists I: Theory

AG Schierbaum (lecture)
The module comprises 4 SWS lecture and is offered by the physics department. The lecture takes place only in the winter semester.

Physics for Biologists II: Practice

The module includes 3 SWS practical course and is offered by the physics department. The practical course takes place only in the summer semester. Successful completion of the module "Physics for Biologists I" is required. PD Dr. Lehmann

Mathematics for biology students

The module takes place in the winter and summer semester. It comprises a 3 SWS lecture with 2 SWS exercises. The module is offered jointly by the mathematics department of Prof. Dr. Braun and the biology department of Prof. Dr. Kollmann. Bio130 - Zoology

The module Bio 130 consists of a four-hour lecture and a four-hour practical course. It is only offered in the summer semester.

Chemistry for biology students

The module is offered by the Department of Chemistry and consists of a lecture covering General, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry and a practical course. The lecture takes place in the summer semester. The practical course takes place in the lecture-free period of the 2nd semester (September).

General and Inorganic Chemistry (only students starting their studies before 2019/20)

The module is offered by the chemistry department and consists of a lecture and a practical course. Time and place of the lecture are published in the electronic course catalogue LSF. The practical course takes place in the summer semester.

Organic chemistry

The module is offered by the chemistry department and consists of a lecture and a practical course. The lecture takes place in the summer semester. The practical course takes place in the lecture-free period of the 2nd semester (August). The announcement of the times of the practical course and the division into practical course groups is made by the subject Chemistry. Contact: Dr. Stefan Beutner


Compulsory modules in the 2nd year

Bio210 - Biochemistry (5 CP)

The module consists of a three-hour lecture and a one-hour exercise. The module is always offered in the winter semester.

Bio220 - Animal physiology (8 CP)

The module consists of a lecture on metabolic physiology (Prof. Dr. Lammert), a lecture on neurobiology (Prof. Dr. Rose), a practical course on metabolic physiology, a practical course on neurobiology and an exercise. The module always takes place in the winter semester.

Bio230 - Biophysics (5CP)

AG Willbold
The module consists of a three-hour lecture and a one-hour exercise. The module is always offered in the winter semester.

 

Bio240

AG Felbrügge  AG Axmann AG Hegemann AG Jaeger AG Fleig AG Frunzke
Bio240 consists of a lecture (3 SWS) and a practical course (3 SWS) with integrated exercises (1 SWS). The practical course takes place in the lecture-free period, around February/March. The module is always offered in the winter semester.

Key qualifications (5 CP)

Students who start their studies before winter semester 2018/2019: in the third semester they attend the seminar and lecture of Dr. Christian Dumpitak (3 CP) and a language course at the Language Centre (2 CP). As an alternative to the language course, a bachelor's seminar in biology can be chosen ( 2 CP). There is no written exam.
Students from the start of winter semester 2018/2019: take part I (the seminar and lecture by Dr. Christian Dumpitak) in the third semester and part II (lecture and project work with Prof. Dr. Stich and Prof. Dr. Zurbriggen) in the fourth semester. An exam will be written and the presentation of the project work will be graded.

Bio250

The module consists of a two-hour lecture, a four-hour practical and a one-hour exercise. It always takes place in the summer semester. The lecture takes place on Thursdays from 8.30-10:00 am. The practical training takes place for each student on two half days of their choice in the second half of the semester.

Bio260

AG L.Rose AG Beye AG Martin
The module consists of a three-hour lecture and a one-hour exercise. The module always takes place in the summer semester. The lecture and the exercise in the lecture hall take place on Wednesdays from 10.30-12.00 and Thursdays from 10.30-12.00.

Bo270

AG Simon AG Klein
The module consists of a two-hour lecture, a one-hour exercise and a two-hour practical course. The module is always offered in the summer semester. The lecture takes place on Fridays from 8.30-10 am. The exercise starts on Thursday at 4.30 pm. The practical course begins with the lecture period in April and ends before the start of the genetics practical course.

Bio280 - Plant physiology (8 CP)

AG Groth AG Jahns AG Bauer AG Martin AG Weber AG Pauly 
The module consists of a lecture, an exercise and a practical course. It is only offered in the summer semester. The lecture takes place on Wednesdays from 8.30-10:00 am. The module starts with a preliminary discussion for the practical course, which is obligatory for all participants.


Optional and compulsory modules in the 3rd year

Place and time of courses can be found in the electronic course catalogue LSF. As a rule, courses are taken via the LSF. More information on the use of the LSF can be found here. Module places in V-modules are allocated centrally (see: central module allocation).

Addational Qualifications 11 CP (BBQ)

The additional Qualifications module (11 CP) consists of a four-week internship (6 CP) and interdisciplinary courses (5 CP). Please send all certificates together to: studienbuero-bio(at)hhu.de 
 


5 CP interdisciplinary courses:

  • Student Academy (Studium Universal/ Language Centre/ KUBUS Programme)
  • after consultation with the study office Events of the Math.-Nat.-Fak.
  • Orientation Tutorial
  • mentoring scheme
  • iGEM (in consultation with the supervisors of the iGEM project)

6 CP Professional internship:

  • 4 weeks (160 h) in a company, usually with biological questions
  • SHK activity (supervision of internships/tutorials)
  • Practical laboratory training (routine work; no project)
  • iGEM (in consultation with the supervisors of the iGEM project)

Students who start their studies at WiSe2019/20 or later cannot have their work experience credited as an internship before they start their studies.

Additional Qualifications: Bio-Choice (7 CP)

In the Bio-Choice module any courses of the subject biology can be taken in the amount of 7 CP, such as

  • a project internship (4 - 6 weeks without exam)
  • a fourth V-module or
  • a corresponding number of lectures (usually 1-2 CP) and seminars (usually 2 CP) from the biology department.
Specialisation modules (9 CP)

Three specialisation modules (V-modules) must be completed during the course of study. These V-modules comprise 9 credit points (CP) and consist of - depending on the lecturer - optional

  • 1 SWS lecture, 6 SWS practical course and 1 SWS seminar or
  • 2 SWS lecture and 6 SWS

Bachelor thesis (15 CP)

The bachelor thesis can be a theoretical or a practical work. It can be supervised by any person (PD or Prof.) entitled to examine it who is active in teaching and research in the subject of biology at the Heinrich Heine University. It comprises the written paper (approx. 20 pages) and an oral presentation. More information on the bachelor thesis can be found on the pages Examination Matters.
