(25.02.2021) Die Neurowissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (NWG) wählte Prof. Dr. Christine Rose, Leiterin des Instituts für Neurobiologie der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf (HHU), zu ihrer Präsidentin. Die bisherige NWG-Vizepräsidentin tritt ihre zweijährige Amtszeit am 30. März bei der Göttinger Tagung der NWG an. (mehr...)


Volkswagen Foundation supports HHU biologist: Dr. Hannes Beyer receives Freigeist Fellowship

(18.02.2021) Dr. Hannes Beyer, group leader at the Institute for Synthetic Biology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU), wants to develop optically controllable, artificially generated tissues. His project "Light-assisted programming of synthetic organoid tissues" will be funded by the Volkswagen Foundation with a total of 1.8 million euros over the next six years. (more...)


Publication in PNAS: Evolution of cereal spikes

(15.02.2021) A research team led by Prof. Dr. Maria von Korff Schmising from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) and the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne investigated the genetic regulation of spike development in barley and wheat. As reported in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), they discovered different barley mutants with wheat-like spikes. Federal Agency for Leap Innovations SPRIND supports Düsseldorf and Jülich researchers: Next step in Alzheimer's therapy

(04.02.2021) The Alzheimer's drug candidate PRI-002 developed at Forschungszentrum Jülich and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) can enter the next phase of development. The Federal Agency for Leap Innovations SPRIND is supporting the development of the new therapeutic approach against Alzheimer's dementia. The therapeutic can now be tested in Alzheimer's patients as part of a Phase II clinical trial PRI-002 had already demonstrated its safety and tolerability when used daily for four weeks in humans in a Phase I clinical trial in spring 2019. Publication in PNAS: Tracking down the mechanisms of environmental adaptation in plants

(01.02.2021) A research team from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) has studied the regulation of enzyme activities in the chloroplasts of plants. In the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), they describe their dependence on light intensity and thus on changing environmental conditions. Sexing of sturgeon for more sustainable caviar production

(29.01.2021)Caviar is so expensive not least because sturgeon are not sexually mature until late and have to be kept for a correspondingly long time. Another complicating factor is that this genus of fish has no external sexual characteristics, so it is not possible to distinguish between male and female animals. Tunatech, a company spun off from the Institute of Metabolic Physiology at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (HHU), has now developed a test that can be used to determine the sex of even young animals. Neurobiology | Publication in the Journal of the Society for Neuroscience: Epilepsy research focused on astrocytes

(25.01.2021) A significant number of epilepsy patients does not respond to currently available drugs. A collaboration between researchers in Japan and at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) now addressed a cell type in the brain that has so far not received much attention in epilepsy therapy. In the current edition of the Journal of Neuroscience, they describe that astrocytes might be a potential new target to better treat this disease. (more...)

 


Key publication in The Plant Cell: Comprehensive characterisation of vascular structure in plants

(12.01.2021) With funding from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, two teams of plant researchers and bioinformatics researchers under the leadership of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) have succeeded for the first time in identifying the functions of the different cell types in the leaf vasculature of plants.
